Intelligenza Artificiale: aspetti e considerazioni

Per evitare ambiguità è indispensabile stabilire il significato che sarà conferito ai termini “intelligenza” ed “artificiale”.
Quello di intelligenza è talmente complesso che è pressoché impossibile esaurirlo con una semplice definizione. Intenderemo, ai nostri fini, l’intelligenza, come capacità di interpretare e comprendere (reductio ad unum) le informazioni che percepiamo. La reductio ad unum servirà, poi, essenzialmente ad alimentare il processo di elaborazione di strategie per la migliore soluzione dei problemi connessi alla selezione della specie.

Un noto vocabolario della lingua italiana riporta per “artificiale” la definizione: <<ottenuto con accorgimenti o procedimenti tecnici che imitano o sostituiscono l’aspetto il prodotto, o il fenomeno naturale>>.
La definizione non ci soddisfa; dovremmo classificare artificiali quasi tutti i prodotti della terra perché, in qualche misura, modificati direttamente o indirettamente da accorgimenti o procedimenti tecnici. Poco, o nulla, ormai sfugge alla manipolazione dell’uomo.
Nel grasso dei pinguini, ad esempio, furono trovate tracce di pesticidi (DDT) trasportati dalle piogge acide.

A tal proposito, Jacques Monod scrive, nel meraviglioso libro <<Il caso e la necessità>>, <<Tutti noi siamo convinti di saper distinguere immediatamente e senza ambiguità, tra vari oggetti, quelli naturali e quelli artificiali: una roccia, una montagna, un fiume, o una nube sono oggetti naturali: un coltello. Un fazzoletto, un’automobile sono oggetti artificiali. Artefatti. Ma appena si analizzano tali giudizi ci si accorge che essi non sono né immediati né del tutto obiettivi>>
L’aspetto più indicativo che differenzia il naturale dall’artificiale, è che l’artefatto è sempre il prodotto di un essere vivente. Il vivente si autoriproduce senza interventi esterni. L’artefatto è il risultato di intervento di forze esterne. Il vivente si è costruito da sé e dal suo interno. L’artefatto no.

Aristotile percepisce che la realtà contiene aspetti finalistici, o meglio potenziali: <<…c’è ciò che è soltanto in atto o soltanto in potenza e ciò che è potenza in atto…>> (Metafisica XI, 9,1065). A fronte di una concezione atemporale aristotelica, la moderna biologia introduce il principio di finalità: la forma del vivente si evolve dal proprio interno per raggiungere stabiliti fini. Il DNA, che è alla radice di questo meccanismo finalistico, ha forze interne della stessa natura di quelle che organizzano le strutture cristalline. In esso non vi è nulla di magico.

Stabilito il significato che, nelle ricerche, è assegnato ai termini “Intelligenza” ed “Artificiale” (AI, acronimo inglese di Artificial Intelligence e IA, italiano) si può comprendere che il fine dell’AI è costruire macchine che emulino aspetti dell’Intelligenza Umana ed, al limite, possano esplicare funzioni del pensare.
Si fanno rientrare nel dominio dell’AI: la comprensione del linguaggio umano (speech recogniction), la visione artificiale (artificial vision), la traduzione automatica (translation system), i sistemi esperti (expert systems ) – emulano esperti umani, ad esempio analisi del sangue, strategie, diagnostica organica e tecnologica,…sistemi tattili, sistemi olfattivi, autoapprendimento, riconoscimento di immagini, oggetti, ambienti,…-), Data Fusion (Comprensione di dati ed informazioni. Ricerche militari privilegiate per comprendere al gran mole di informazioni di intelligence ed operative raccolte sul campo di battaglia o a livelli tattici e strategici più elevati per i sistemi di Comando e Controllo cosiddetti C3, C4, C5 nel settore della raccolta, riconoscimento, disseminazione delle informazioni utili ai processi decisionali)

Il Data Fusion è il kernel delle ricerche sull’AI.
Non è difficile immaginare i benefici di questa tecnologia che consentirà a tutte le strutture organizzative, industriali, commerciali, sanitarie, trasporti, finanziarie, bancarie… di rispondere al quesito che ci poniamo di fronte all’analisi di una gran mole di informazioni “quali significati assumono queste informazioni ai fini degli scopi che devo perseguire?”. Per l’uomo è pressoché impossibile analizzare, valutare, scegliere, correlare –per l’appunto “comprendere, mettere insieme per capire”- a volte, miliardi di informazioni, in tempo reale che, spesso oscurano la realtà piuttosto che chiarirla.

Ovviamente gli USA, compreso il valore immenso di questa ricerca, investono in essa copiose risorse, materiali ed immateriali. Vi sono coinvolti almeno 5 premi Nobel. I sistemi di comando e controllo utilizzati nella guerra in Iraq, inducono ad ipotizzare l’impiego di prototipi. Non si spiegherebbe, altrimenti, la capacità decisionale accentrata nel Comando Centrale ove pervengono miriadi di informazioni da un numero enorme di fonti (satellitari, aeree, terrestri, elettroniche, umane…). L’impiego di migliaia di analisti non sarebbe stato in grado di analizzare, valutare, correlare, selezionare, processare,diffondere in tempo reale, una massa di dati di certo non a misura d’uomo.

Se l’Europa comprendesse il valore di questa campo di ricerca concentrerebbe su di esso sufficienti risorse e, soprattutto, la volontà, almeno per non rimanere al buio.
E’ bene chiarire subito che le ricerche sull’AI hanno dato, fino ad ora, frutti nettamente inferiori a quelli sperati (buoni risultati si sono avuti nei settori della diagnostica, dello speech recognition, della artificial vision, della pattern recognition e di taluni aspetti della robotica.

Questa affascinante scienza-tecnologia, che, manco a dirlo, è presente in Omero nel XIII canto dell’Iliade. Teti, va da Efèsto; chiede la costruzione di un nuovo scudo per Achille. Efèsto, fabbro divino, come in un film su James Bond, impiega strumenti sofisticati. In due diversi passi Omero parla di carrelli automatici costruiti da Efèsto, e di ragazze d’oro (fatte d’oro e non nel senso di brave e belle) che lo aiutano nei suoi lavori
…con lui pur movevano ancelle/scolpite nell’oro che in tutto sembravano vive fanciulle,/perché senno entro i petti racchiudono, e forza e favella,/…

Artificial intelligence: aspects and considerations

To limit ambiguities, is essential to establish the meaning that we will be conferred to the terms ” intelligence ” and artificial. The meaning of intelligence is so complex that is nearly impossible to exhaust it with a simple definition. We will intend – to our goals – the intelligence as ability to interpret and to understand (reductio ad unum) the information that we perceive. The reductio ad unum will essentially serve to feed the process of elaboration of strategies for the better solution of the connected problems to the selection of the kind.
A known dictionary of the Italian language brings for artificial the definition: “Gotten with shrewdness or technical procedures that imitate or they replace the aspect, the product or the natural phenomenon”. This definition doesn’t satisfy us, because we should classify artificial almost all the products of the earth in how much in some measure modified by shrewdness or technical procedures. Few or nothing, escape by now the direct or indirect manipulation of the man. In the fat of the penguins – for instance – traces of DDT were found transported by the sour rains.

To such intention, Jacques Monod writes in the marvelous book “The case and the necessity”: “All of us are convinced to know how to immediately distinguish and without ambiguity among varied objects, those natural and those artificial,; a rock, a mountain, a river, or a cloud are natural objects; a knife, a handkerchief, a car they are artificial objects But as soon as such judgments are analyzed, it realizes us that they are not neither immediate neither entirely objective”.

The aspect more indicative that differentiates the natural one from the artificial one, is that the artificialo one is always the product of a living being. The living one it self-reproduce thout external interventions. The artificial one is the result of intervention of external strengths. The living one is built by itself and by his inside. The artificial one no.

Aristotile perceives that reality contains aspects , or better potential: ” …c’è what is only in action or only in power and what is power in action…” (Metaphysical XI, 9,1065). Á. forehead of a conception atemporale aristotelica, modern biology introduces the principle of finality: the form of the living one is evolved by his/her own inside to reach established ends. The DNA, that is to the root of this purposal mechanism , has inside strengths of the same nature of those that organize the crystalline structures. In it there is void not magic.

Established the meaning that is assigned ” Intelligence ” to the terms in the searches and Artificial (AI. the, English acronym of Artificial Intelligence; IA in Italian), we can be understood that the goal of the IA is to build cars that emulates aspects of the Human intelligence and – to the limit – can expound functions of the to think.

They are made to reenter in the dominion of the IA: the understanding of the human language (speech recogniction); the artificial vision (artificial vision); the automatic translation (translation system); the experienced systems (expert systems, that the human experts emulate, for instance: analysis of the blood, strategies, diagnostic organic and technological, tactile systems, systems olfattivi, self-learning, recognition of images, objects, environments…); Data Fusion (understanding of data and information; military searches privileged for understanding the big massive structure of information of intelligence and operational harvests on the battleground or to more elevated tactical and strategic levels for the systems of Command and Control so-called C3s, C4, C5 in the sector of the harvest, recognition, dissemination of the useful information to the decisional trials).

The Date Fusion is the kernel of the searches on the IA. it is not difficult to imagine the benefits of this technology that it will allow all the organizational structures (industrial, commercial, sanitary, of the transports, financial, banking…) to answer to the question that we set there in front of the analysis of a big massive structure of information: “Which meant they assume these information to the goals of the purposes that I have to pursue”? For the man it is nearly impossible to analyze, to appraise, to choose, to correlate (to understand, to put together for understanding) at times information’s billion in real time that often darken reality rather than to clarify it.

USA, obviously included the immense value of this search, they invest in it great resources, material and immaterial. They have gotten involved many Nobel. The systems of command and control used in the war in Iraq does us to hypothesize the employment of prototypes. The decisional ability would not be explained otherwise centralized in the Central Command, where they reach information from an enormous number of sources (satellitar, aerial, earthlings, electronics, human…). the employment of thousand of analysts would not Even have been enough to analyze, to appraise, to correlate, to select, to try, to spread not in real time a mass of data of certain livable. If Europe included the value of this only search, it would assemble on it resources and – above all – wish, at least not to remain to the dark.

It’s well immediately to clarify that the searches on the IA have given thin to now inferior fruits clearly to the hoped ones (good results are had in the sectors of the speech recognition, of the artificial vision, pattern recognition and some aspects of the robotics (the robotics is the synthesis of the application of the searches on the IA).

This fascinating science-technology is present – not even to say him/it – already in Humerus, in the XIII I sing some Iliade. Teti goes from Efèsto and wonders construction of a new shield for Achille. Efèsto, divine blacksmith, as in a film of James Bond it employs sophisticated tools.
